Nikki Giovanni
Blue Book, Turning
Vacation Time: Poems for Children, 1980

Selections

I selected these books because they represent classic Nikki Giovanni poetry for children.  These titles serve as wonderful examples of poetic expression covering a variety of topics from summer vacation to basketball.  Boys and girls will surely find a favorite poem from at least one these titles.  I discovered the poem, Ego-tripping while in middle school and it still remains one of my favorite poems today! The illustrations are appealing, creative, and complement Giovannis rhymes superbly! Two of the titles (Knoxville, Tennesse and The Genie in the Jar) are picture books that derived from poems.
