Taylor Mildred. 1995. The Well. Puffin Books. New York: ISBN: 0140386424

Mama came over to the dirt driveway and looked again at the Simmes'. "Ya'll come to get water?" "Yeah, they said showing her no respect neither one saying yes, maam to her."

Set in the early 1900's, this story focuses on David and Hammer Logan and Charlie Simms. During a drought, the Logan family shares their well with neighbors, black and white. The Logan family is privileged.  Their status is the source of Charlie Simms' jealously and resentment towards the family. His negative feelings lead to violence and mischief.

Through David's narration, Taylor gives rage and humiliation caused by prejudice a human voice. She communicates the evils and indignity elements connected to bigotry in a dynamic manner that is moving and thought provoking! This book would be an excellent resource for middle school students.
