Park, Sue Linda. 2001. A Single Shard. Clarion Books. New York: ISBN: 0395978270

Set in a twelfth century Korean village, A Single Shard introduces readers to Tree-ear, an orphan.  Challenged by homelessness, poverty, and hunger, Tree-ear and his physically challenged guardian Crane-man are determined to rise above their circumstances.  Heavily influenced by Crane-man, Tree-ear proves to be extremely honest, polite, and sincere.

Determined to become a potter, he is fascinated with his idol, Min.  After damaging one of Min's pieces, Tree-ear becomes employed by the master potter to pay off his debt.  Continuing to work for Min after his debt is paid, this story highlights Tree-ear's courage and perseverance as he visits the royal court on Min's behalf.

A true story of courage and determination.  Tree-ear, Crane-man, and Min will be remembered by young readers long after the last page is turned!  Aside from being a culturally enriching story, this novel also provides insight on the process of making celadon pottery.  It is an extremely interesting book for young readers seeking an escape to unfamiliar territory in reading.
