Prelutsky, Jack. 2001. Awful Orgre's Awful Day. Greenwillow Books:
New York: ISBN: 0688077781

Disgusting yet amusing poems describe a day in the life of Awful Orgre.  From sunup to sundown, readers are treated to the gory details of Awful Orgre's daily rituals through humorous poetic verse.

Another day has started,
I stretch and yawn and shout,
Then I rap my cudgel on my skull
To shake the cobwebs out....

Throughout the book, young readers are given gruesome accounts of each adventure with entertaining and uniquely descriptive rhymes!

Oh breakfast, lovely breakfast,
You're the meal I savor the most.
I sip a bit of gargoyle bile
And chew some ghoul on toast....

Zelinsky's larger than life illustrations adequately coincide with Awful Orgre's larger than life antics.  The drawings on each page complement the repulsive verses providing the reader with extremely vivid yet sometimes gross imagery.  Zelinsky effectively connects the reader's imagination with the despicable realities of Awful orgre's daily existence.

Prelutsky's verses are upbeat, witty, and includes challenging vocabulary.  Older readers as well as young poetry enthisiasts will appreciate this book.  However, if you have a weak stomach and thin skin, this is not the book to sink your nose in!
