Scieszka, Jon. 1991. The Frog Prince Continued. Viking:
New York. ISBN: 0670834211

"The Princess kissed the frog
He turned into a prince
And they lived happily ever after.

What happens when the frog and the princess do not live happily ever after?  As Jon Scieszka shows us in The Frog Prince Continued, the frog prince goes on a journey hoping to be turned back into a frog.  Throughout his journey, the frog encounters characters from several fairy tales.  Because he remembers the endings to most of these tales, he is able to take control of his fate.  He visits several witches who will not carry out his request.  When he visits the fairy godmother, his destiny changes and as a result he learns a valuable life lesson.

Scieszka's tale includes extremely humorous text.  Quick witted responses and reactions of the frog prince included in the text make this story extremely amusing and entertaining to young readers.

"Oh what an idiot I've been......Now, I'll probably just rot and fall apart and live unhappily ever after."

Johnson's illustrations provide relevant transitions to each page of the story.  Many of these illustrations allow readers to revisit a different fairy tale on each page.  Johnson includes gothic vintage looking illustrations that are worthy of scenes from a fairy tale.  Young readers who enjoy humorous stories will enjoy this tale, and they will be laughing happily ever after!
