"Who would have thought things could be so unbelievable pooey? Im only fourteen and my life is over because of the selfishosity of-so-called grown-ups."
Louise Rennison reintroduces young readers to the outrageously funny British teenager, Georgia Nicolson in this highly energetic and entertaining novel. Georgia is fourteen and due to a series of unrelated events, her life seems to be in chaos. From the dreadful move to New Zealand with her family to the fact that her Sex God boyfriend Robbie has not called her, this teen is definitely getting her share of bad luck. Throughout the book, Georgia shares the dramatic episodes of her life in a day by day, minute by minute by minute format!
"I dont want to be rude to the afflicted but Uncle Eddie is bald in a bald way which is the baldest I have ever seen. He looks like a boiled egg in leather trousers."
The dialogue in On the Bright Side..is extremely humorous and entertaining. Written in first person voice, the book is filled with funny witty comments. This feature definitely sets the book apart from other young adult novels. Other distinguished features include the format the book is written in and the use of British language. The story is written like a diary complete with dates and times of the entries. Rennison sprinkles Georgia's "Britishisms" throughout the story for literary flavor!
"I am so nervous..What if I have forgotten how to snog? What if all of my snogging lessons go out of my mind at the last minute and we bump teeth?"
Through Rennison's characterization of Georgia, I am certain readers will agree the lives of teen girls are similar regardless of their cultural background. Life will forever be chaotic, dramatic, and sometimes unbearable (due to overwhelming parents) but there is always a bright side!
I highly recommend this book to teen girls who love humorous stories!
