"Heather's favorite number is two..
Heather has two pets: a ginger colored cat named Gingersnap and a big
Black dog named Midnight. Heather also has two mommies, Mama Jane and Mama Kate."
In Heather Has Two Mommies, young readers are introduced to Heather, a young girl with two mommies. The story describes Heather's birth and how she became Mama Jane's and Mama Kate's daughter. In her pre-school classroom, Heather discovers her family is different from the other students. This discovery enables Heather and all of her classmates to realize every family is different and special and deserves unconditional love!
Souza's illustrations allow young readers to visually experience all of Heather's emotions throughout the story. Black and white pencil drawings highlight Heather's life from birth to her first day of school and many things in between.
Throughout the story, the family is portrayed as a different yet normal family. The two parents work and Heather goes to school. They spend time at the end of the day with each other and their dogs. Newman goes to great measures to celebrate Heathers family instead of her parents lifestyle.
While this story is innovative, the artificial insemination explanation may be a bit too mature for children. The explanation is too detailed and takes the focus off the true value of this story which is Heather's wonderful family.
Heather Has Two Mommies would be a wonderful story to share with children. Depending on the age and maturity level of the audience, it may be a good idea to leave out how Mama Jane was impregnated.
