Weisner, David.  2001.  The Three Pigs. Houghton Mifflin Company.  New York:
ISBN: 0618007016

In this version of the classic tale, the joke is definitely on the wolf!  The story begins with the wolf destroying the houses of two of the three pigs.  Miraculously, the pigs escape!  Along with the third pig, the trio explore a world full of playtime and newly formed friendships. Unfortunately, the pigs do not fully escape the awful wolf.  He attempts to destroy the third house but the end result is suprising.  The story shows young readers that the good guys sometimes prevail!

Wiesner is successful at creating an updated version of this beloved classic by fine tuning the langauage and illustrations.  The superb illustrations provide dramatic points of transition for the reader.  Each page allows the reader to experience the pig's escapades through bold and powerful images .  This grabs the attention of young readers and makes it possible for them to creatively follow the story and fantasize about the outcomes.

The language is filled with sound and animation.  Weisner's use of words such as Oof!, hey diddle diddle, and Wheee bring the character's voices to life.  Despite the fact that a couple of blank pages leave the readers longing for more dialogue, this version of the story is truly a modern day classic.
