Asian American Poetry

Introduction

Before reading this poem, share with children a nightmare you experienced as a child involving a monster. Describe the monster!!!

Nightmare

Youre afraid

That the things

You see

On TV

Those scary things,

Super scary when true,

Will sneak into the back of your mind,

Will follow you,

Will follow you,

Down the hall to your cold dark room,

Down the hall to your cold dark room,

And in the quiet of the night

Those things will spring into your dreams,

Giving you a frightful scare---

A news-at-seven true nightmare.

Extension

Allow children to share one of their nightmares involving a monster.  Have them draw paintings of these monsters. After the paintings are completed, create a "MONSTERS WANTED" board so that all children will be on lookout for these monsters and can inform each other of sightings. Hopefully, they will all be captured and never bother children again!!!! J
