Say, Allen. 1997. Allison. Houghton Mifflin Company. New York: ISBN: 039585895

When Allison, a young Chinese girl notices she looks more like her doll, Mei Mei than her parents, she becomes upset. After asking her parents a series of questions, Allison finds out she comes from another country. A stray cat helps Allison cope with this new discovery. As a result, the cat becomes the newest member of her family.

Allison is presented with honey-toned skin and a short bob haircut with bangs. Her doll, Mei Mei is a miniature version of the young girl. Say presents Allison and her doll Mei Mei in vibrant multi-colored and red kimonos, traditional Chinese robes, Perhaps the most significant cultural aspect of the story is the message that love transcends race. Allison is loved by Caucasian parents and friends of various ethnicities in this story.

This is wonderful story to share with young children and especially those who are adopted.
