Goble, Paul. 1992. Love Flute. Bradbury Press. New York: ISBN: 0027362612

"With the melodies of this flute, you will speak straight to the heart of the girl you love."

In Love Flute, a young Native American boy is challenged by his love for a young girl and his inability to communicate these feelings to her. Feeling defeated, he leaves his camp and walks for four days. On the fourth day, he is approached by Elk Men. The Elk Men bring the young boy a gift that will surely win the young girl's heart and fill her ears with beautiful sounds of love.

Goble's paintings are brightly colored and provide realistic and detailed visuals for the text. The illustrations definitely bring the characters to life as well as the tradition of courting as it occurs in the village.  Deep bronze toned characters are presented in traditional Native American attire. Characters are creatively draped in capes, dresses, and headbands that feature Native American designs. Goble authenticates the illustrations by presenting drawings of the love flute as they appear in various museum drawings.

The story begins with an explanation on the significance of the love flute. In addition, details on the courting tradition are provided. Goble has presented an extremely creative story that is intriguing and interesting enough to be enjoyed by children and young adult readers.
