Mora, Pat. 1994. Pablo's Tree. MacMillan Publishing Company. New York: ISBN: 0227674010

"I went to the nursery down the street and brought a small tree. I said, este arbol es para mi nieto. This is for my grandson."

When Pablo was adopted, his Grandfather, Lito planted a tree in his honor.  Each year, Lito celebrates Pablo's birthday by decorating the tree. Lito chooses different decorations each year. From streamers and balloons to paper lanterns and birdcages, Lito is full of surprises.  On his fourth and most recent birthday, Pablo is surprised with bells and chimes. He is already eager to receive next year's gift!

Moras plain text is filled with excitement. She portrays Lito's and Pablo's relationship as affectionate and genuine.

"I gave Lito another giant hug, and again I almost knock him down. But he just smiles."

Lang's vibrant and colorful illustrations complement the lively text magnificently! The characters are presented in brightly colored clothing that delicately accentuates the warm rich skin tones of this Mexican-American family. With rosy cheeks and wide set eyes, Lang truly features beautifully illustrated characters.

Pablo's Tree is a wonderful intergenerational story that celebrates family and is an excellent choice for classroom story time.
