Born to a Methodist minister, Julius Lester grew up in the southern part of our country. He is an extremely talented author who has won an ALA Notable Book Award, a Newberry Honor Medal, Caldecott Honor Award, New York Times Outstanding Book Award, and Boston Globe-Horn Book Award.  A professor at the University of Massachusetts since 1971, Mr. Lester is the only faculty member who has been awarded all three of the university's most prestigious faculty awards: The Distinguished Teacher's Award, The Faculty Fellowship Award for Distinguished Research and Scholarship, and the Chancellor's Medal, the university's highest honor.  The following websites provide additional information of the talented author and professor.
