Born to a Methodist minister, Julius Lester grew up in the southern part of our country. He is an extremely talented author who has won an ALA Notable Book Award, a Newberry Honor Medal, Caldecott Honor Award, New York Times Outstanding Book Award, and Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. A professor at the University of Massachusetts since 1971, Mr. Lester is the only faculty member who has been awarded all three of the university's most prestigious faculty awards: The Distinguished Teacher's Award, The Faculty Fellowship Award for Distinguished Research and Scholarship, and the Chancellor's Medal, the university's highest honor.
