Poetry Break # 3

(Song: Kum Ba Yah)

Introduction

Share with children what you love about the sea. Allow them to share some of the things they love about the sea or other bodies of water. Encourage them to discuss their favorite water activities.

I Love the Sea

I love the sea, the rippling sea,

The ebbing, smiling, sunlit sea,

Hiding a world of mystery,

Like you and me!

I love the sea, the placid sea,

The sleeping, glassy, silent sea,

Dreaming on long eternity,

Like you and me!

I love the sea! The heaving sea,

The mighty, moontost, angry sea,

Fretting from bondage to be free

Like you and me!

                                                         Alfred M. Cruikshank

Extension

Allow children to create picture collages of their favorite water sport activities and write brief poems relating to the picture.

Song Choice: Kum Ba Yah

I love the sea! the rippling sea

(kum ba ya, my lord kum ba yah)

the ebbing, smiling, sunlit sea,

(kum ba yah, my lord kum ba yah)

Hiding a world of mi-sta- ry
